He was a sea captain who with others built the first three masted schooner at Blue Hill, Maine. He later was the captain of that ship.
Newspaper Report, 1875: "Damriscotta, Me. Jan 1--Schr T.R. Hughly, Chandler, of Kennebec, from Millbridge for Boston, with timber, went ashore on a small island near the mouth of the Damriscotta River on Friday night. The crew consisted of the captain and two hands. One of the latter, Benjamin Means, of Millbridge, was frostbitten and injured severely. He died soon after reaching the shore. Part of the cargo will be saved. The vessel went to pieces. She was insured." [The clipping was pasted in the Account Book of the ZOUAVE, but the newspaper and date of the item was not identified. It probably was a Bangor newspaper.]
87. Andrew J. (F.) Means Capt.
Andrew Means was captain of the bark "Cremona", and later was captain of the
clipper ship "Zouave", probably after the retirement of Lemuel G. Means in 1881 or 1882.
Descendants of Jesse claim that his mother was Mary Dodge and the father was Robert Means. Because Robert Means was listed as having 17 or more children by various family histories, it is quite probable that he was married more than once and therefore could have had both Mary Dodge and Mary Ray as wives. That leaves the question of which children had which mother. If the child "Ray" (or Rae) was the last of the children of Mary Ray, then Mary Dodge could very well be the mother for Jesse, Dorcas, Thomas, and perhaps Sarah. nd the father was Robert Means.
